Several types of laser or light source treatments are available today. A light beam is pulsed onto the veins to seal them off and cause them to collapse. Treatments may be combined with sclerotherapy, and multiple treatments are usually required.
What is EVLT?
EVLT involves first using duplex ultrasound to map out the saphenous vein and then moving a laser fiber through the vein to the groin. The laser then emits highly targeted energy to seal the vein shut. Thermal ablation causes contraction and permanent occlusion of the blood vessel being treated, with minimal effects beyond the vessel wall. Unlike treatments such as sclerotherapy, ambulatory phlebectomy, and ligation and stripping, EVLT addresses the main underlying source of the problem.
